Movie Nights Continue!

The summer’s weekly movie nightswere a big success and were the focus of a Victoria, Times Colonist article. First Metropolitan will continue offering movies once each month during the fall and winter. Join others in watching the movie and discussing it afterward. No admission but donations gratefully received. The lineup includes:

  • Nov 23, Gran Torino, a Clint Eastwood movie that deals with the tougher, messier questions of American life.
  • Dec 14, The Princess Bride, directed by Rob Reiner, this movie transports you to a place out of time – Floriin – a kingdom complete with dashing heroes, cowardly princes, rhyming giants and much more. Roger Ebert says this movie is “filled with good-hearted fun.”
  • Jan 11, Away from Her, is the directorial debut of Canadian actress Sarah Polley. Adapted from an Alice Munro story, the plot examines the deterioration of Grant (Gordon Pinsent) and Fiona’s (Julie Christie) 50 year old marriage with the progression of Fiona’s Alzheimer’s dissease. The film portrays its characters as multifaceted people filled with wisdom and true beauty, thanks to their age and not in spite of it.

Sep 21: Happy-Go-Lucky takes the audience on a crazy journey through the life of an extra-ordinary and often oddly happy elementary school teacher.

Oct 19: Sita Sings the Blues An infectious, dazzling and poignant story about love and loyalty in both mythical India and modern America, featuring fascinating animation.
