Faith In Action

Faith in Action is a group of people from many different faith communities in Greater Victoria with a shared concern for the poor and vulnerable in our society. Our focus is to advocate for BC income assistance programs and other anti-poverty initiatives that recognize the dignity and worth of all citizens. All who share this vision of a just and sharing community are welcome to join with us.

By consultation, collaboration and consensus, Faith in Action works:

  • To educate our members and faith communities about the needs of the poor.
  • To provide resources, forums and venues that enable persons of faith to participate in finding creative solutions to identified problems and issues.
  • To engage in an on-going conversation with all levels of government about the need to humanize the policies, services and programs that assist the poor.
  • To communicate what has been learned to the news media and in the public arena.

Volunteering at First†Met

Volunteer Leadership: Putting Your Faith into Action!

Helen MacKayHelen MacKay, sound technician, Inner City dinner greeter and more!

When have you said “yes” and were glad you did? Few things delight the heart of God more than when we respond to the Spirit’s promptings by saying (and living) “yes” in ways which make a positive difference in the world and in our own lives.

First Metropolitan is committed to discerning, nurturing and celebrating the gifts of lay people. We want our volunteers to be engaged in ministry which is:

  • meaningful
  • manageable
  • well-suited to their gifts and temperament and
  • life-giving to both volunteers and those who benefit from their participation

In the process, self-awareness grows, faith is deepened, lasting friendships are forged, and the moving of Spirit is acknowledged and celebrated.

As all Christians are followers of Jesus,
So each Christian is called to ministry…
Gifts are diverse
Ministries take various forms
All are essential to the work of the church.

Join with religious leaders in a 35-minute service designed to draw attention to the needs of the vulnerable, and to lift up begging as a spiritual practice. If you can’t come to this important event, you can still participate by sending your answer to this question: If you had to beg this provincial government for justice in regards to the poor and the vulnerable in our communities, what would you ask for? A few ideas might be affordable and appropriate housing, increased income assistance and disability rates, higher minimum wager, more support for the working poor… Send your “asks” to the email address below. If you could include your name, that will make this action even more personal, but it isn’t necessary. Your contributions will be compiled, printed out and placed in the bowl for presentation in the legislature by a member of the Legislative Assembly on April 28.

Executive of General Council Approves Plan for Triennium and Beyond

May 3, 2010

The Executive of the General Council has approved a comprehensive plan to build a vibrant, faithful, and sustainable future for The United Church of Canada.

The Executive met in Toronto May 1–3 to consider “Planning for a Future Grounded in Faith and Action,” a report requested by the Sub-Executive of the General Council and developed by the General Secretary after extensive consultations. The report set out four options to enable the United Church to live out God’s mission more effectively in a changing world, and ensure the General Council’s financial sustainability during the 2011–13 triennium and beyond.

After thoughtful and prayerful consideration, the Executive unanimously adopted key directions aimed at encouraging and revitalizing ministries and simplifying processes, including:

  • focusing the work of the General Council Office on supporting denominational identity and connection
  • clarifying and redefining the roles of the courts of the church and reducing the complexity and size of The Manual
  • establishing a Network for Ministry Development to offer training and consultation on congregational and new ministry development, and a New Ministries Fund seeded with $1 million from United Church reserves to support new and innovative ministries
  • giving high priority to using new technologies and new media to their full potential, recognizing that accommodations will be necessary due to limited access to these technologies in some parts of Canada

Many of these initiatives will be developed and implemented over the triennium. Other parts of the plan will require further development and, in some cases, the approval of the General Council, which is scheduled to meet next in 2012.

As the Executive’s decision is implemented and the church reorients itself toward the future, budget realities mean a number of less welcome transitions will take place. These include the loss of 15–20 staff positions at the General Council Office over the triennium, and reductions in grants to mission support, global partners, theological schools, and education centres.

The loss of valued colleagues, work, and support for partnerships will be difficult. In its extensive discussion and discernment, the Executive recognized that embracing this plan for the future will bring opportunities, as well as loss.

At the same time as these reductions are being implemented, the new directions and initiatives approved by the Executive will ensure the church continues to be relevant and faithful in a changing context.

Background

The Executive of the General Council acts on behalf of the General Council between General Council meetings, and generally meets twice a year. The Executive is composed of 50 voting members, both lay and ministry personnel, representing all 13 Conferences, francophone, ethnic, and Aboriginal constituencies, and various national committees.
