QVC: A Social Group for Gay, Bisexual, Lesbian and Transgendered

In the past there has been great misunderstanding between the Christian community and the gay and lesbian community. This has led to much abuse, both ways, so that it has been difficult to be “out” as a gay, bisexual, lesbian or transgendered person in the Christian community or as a Christian in the gay and lesbian community.

The United Church is working to break down the barriers and has a network of supportive, affirming and or inclusive congregations. It worked with other groups to bring about the legalization of same-sex marriages.

Please let anyone you know who may be interested that Queer Victoria Christians, a new, seeker-friendly social group meets monthly at  First†Metropolitan United Church. This social group is for gay, bisexual, lesbian and transgendered people who wish to explore their connection with God. Sponsored by the Victoria Presbytery of the United Church. Merry Mates

The object of the "Merry Mates" club is to promote the fellowship of the people within the orbit of the church and to support church enterprises to maintain the Christian family. The group meets on the first Friday of the month except for July and August. Meetings are usually held in members’ homes but occasionally are moved to another venue including the church.

After club business is briefly dealt with, the members enjoy a program and refreshments. They often have speakers, slide/video presentations, barbecues, go on hikes, plan tours, games nights and a year-end Christmas dinner.

Anyone interested in more information may telephone the membership officer at (250) 479-4882 or contact the Church Office.

Friendship Club

The purpose of the Friendship Club is to enjoy the fellowship of its members. They meet on the first and third Wednesdays of each month.

Many interesting speakers have addressed them on topics related to travel, education, health, fitness and financial planning. During the nice weather they go on field trips and picnics around Victoria, and occasionally will attend live theatre or concerts as a group or go out for dinner. At Christmas, their Christmas tree donations are given to The Open Door.

They also contribute from time to time to the church community and to their own members with cards and/or flowers during sickness or loss of family. New members are always welcome.

For more information, please contact the Church Office.

Ramblers

The Ramblers is a group of First/Met outdoor enthusiasts who meet once a month for a walk in the woods, along a beach, or on occasion we even hike up a mountain.
Previous adventures have included walks around Thetis/Beaver Lake, Matheson Lake, treks along French Beach, a hike up Mt. Finlayson and along the Gowlland Todd trail in Highlands. We often include a stop for lunch or a light supper afterwards.
We are group-run – everyone is asked to help in the selection of trails. If you would like to join us, please notify Marg and she will put you on the call-out list. View some pictures of a recent hike.

Next Walk:
Sat. Feb.18 in Goldstream Park. Up to the Prospectors’ Trail and across the highway to the Arbutus Trail. Lots of forest hiking. A moderately difficult hike. Meet 9 a.m at the Balmoral entrance to the church. If you plan to come let Marg (mull@shaw.ca) or Rennie (250-592-9161) know before 9 p.m. on Fri. Feb.17 so that we know whom to expect.

A Walk with the Ramblers at Witty’s Lagoon

Where is the Holy Land?
Is it far from here,
a place of violence and conflict?
Or is the holy land wherever your foot steps,
on flattened grass wet with dew,
on needle-strewn paths striped by the shadows of tall cedars,
on sand that sinks and resists,
on rocks that bruise your naked feet
and splintered logs that have been weathered white in the sea?
The longest dreams
are days spent in the woods
and the holy land is here
where every step is sacred. (Edeana Malcom)
