Day of Blessing: The Call, The Song of the Fire

Date: Saturday, Oct 3, 2009
Time(s): 9:30 am to 4:00 pm
Location: Queenswood Centre, 2494 Arbutus Road

An Inter-Spiritual retreat day. In each moment we are called to fully engage with life.  We hear this call within our bodies, minds and hearts. This day will focus on listening to the “still small voice within”; to Spirit’s call within our lives.  We will spend time in silence, guided meditation, body prayers, and walking in nature.  We will draw on a variety of spiritual traditions: Christian, Buddhist, Sufi (the mystical tradition of Islam), and Metis-First Nations. You will go away with several practices to continue your deep connection with yourself, with Spirit and with the earth itself. Sponsored by First Metropolitan and facilitated by Linda Mulhall, MEd. Fee $75 includes workshop materials, lunch and snacks, First Metropolitan members, $45 . Non-members receive a discount of $10 when they register for both the Oct. 3 and Dec. 5 retreat days. See the description of The Song of the Earth and of Darkness.

Joint Needs Assessment Survey

The Joint Needs Assessment Committee (JNAC) has been asked to determine and recommend the direction that should be taken in meeting the personnel needs at First Metropolitan United Church. Some of the considerations JNAC is reviewing are:

* What are the prime focal points of our mission and ministry as a congregation?
* What is the nature of a large downtown church and how does it affect the way we live our mission?
* What aspects of our church’s life require ministry staff?
* What is financially viable?

There are many areas critical to our congregation. Our initial consultations have identified some key areas for review.

We would greatly appreciate your response.

Executive of General Council Approves Plan for Triennium and Beyond

May 3, 2010

The Executive of the General Council has approved a comprehensive plan to build a vibrant, faithful, and sustainable future for The United Church of Canada.

The Executive met in Toronto May 1–3 to consider “Planning for a Future Grounded in Faith and Action,” a report requested by the Sub-Executive of the General Council and developed by the General Secretary after extensive consultations. The report set out four options to enable the United Church to live out God’s mission more effectively in a changing world, and ensure the General Council’s financial sustainability during the 2011–13 triennium and beyond.

After thoughtful and prayerful consideration, the Executive unanimously adopted key directions aimed at encouraging and revitalizing ministries and simplifying processes, including:

  • focusing the work of the General Council Office on supporting denominational identity and connection
  • clarifying and redefining the roles of the courts of the church and reducing the complexity and size of The Manual
  • establishing a Network for Ministry Development to offer training and consultation on congregational and new ministry development, and a New Ministries Fund seeded with $1 million from United Church reserves to support new and innovative ministries
  • giving high priority to using new technologies and new media to their full potential, recognizing that accommodations will be necessary due to limited access to these technologies in some parts of Canada

Many of these initiatives will be developed and implemented over the triennium. Other parts of the plan will require further development and, in some cases, the approval of the General Council, which is scheduled to meet next in 2012.

As the Executive’s decision is implemented and the church reorients itself toward the future, budget realities mean a number of less welcome transitions will take place. These include the loss of 15–20 staff positions at the General Council Office over the triennium, and reductions in grants to mission support, global partners, theological schools, and education centres.

The loss of valued colleagues, work, and support for partnerships will be difficult. In its extensive discussion and discernment, the Executive recognized that embracing this plan for the future will bring opportunities, as well as loss.

At the same time as these reductions are being implemented, the new directions and initiatives approved by the Executive will ensure the church continues to be relevant and faithful in a changing context.

Background

The Executive of the General Council acts on behalf of the General Council between General Council meetings, and generally meets twice a year. The Executive is composed of 50 voting members, both lay and ministry personnel, representing all 13 Conferences, francophone, ethnic, and Aboriginal constituencies, and various national committees.
