The roof of the church, under which so much spiritual nurture and community service has taken place, reached the end of its life this Spring. Through the summer and early fall, work commenced to replace the roof with new metal shingles. This ensures a long life of the roof and enables the building to continue to serve the needs of the congregation and the community well into the future. In addition, the work undertaken ensures that the building is more energy efficient, safer and more environmentally friendly. Raise the Roof is an opportunity for the family of First Metropolitan United Church and the wider community to ensure First Met’s future. For more information on the need and the campaign…
While the work has been completed, the fundraising efforts continue. We have raised a significant portion of the cost of the repairs, but more is still needed. We need your support. We thank our many contributors including members of our congregation and the wider community.
Background: A recent report on the building’s condition by Stantec Consulting Ltd, a firm providing professional design and consulting services in planning, engineering, architecture, surveying, and project management, identifies certain repairs that must soon be done to our building. These necessary repairs include reshingling the roof, heating system repairs, insulation and a start on basic earthquake protection.
A series of forums for congregation members was held early in May and a vote was held on Sunday, May 15 affirming the congregation support of undertaking the full project estimated at:
- Re-shingle the Sanctuary Roof @ $225,000
- Insulation @ $50,000
- Re-enforced trusses (seismic upgrade) @ $125,000
- Upgrade Heating System @ $75,000
Total cost was anticipated to be $475,000. However, when bids were received for the work, the cost rose to $540,000.
